Saturday Megan & I went on a little adventure to Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, RI. After walking around the massive fort and taking pictures I wanted to learn a bit more about it's history. From what I can tell, the fort was first built in the summer of 1776 and was used for coastal defense . However it was surrendered to the British early on in the Revolutionary War without a shot even being fired! In 1778 the British abandoned the fort and the French took it over, only to go back into British possession in 1779. The fort was pretty much abandoned from 1779 until about 1898 when it was used in the Spanish-American War. During World War I & World War II troops were stationed at the fort and updates were made, but it didn't see any action. At the end of World War II German POW's were showed anti-nazi feelings were sent here to undergo training before heading back to Germany to become leaders in rebuilding Germany. Nothing much has happened with Fort Wetherill since the 1960's and thats made abundantly clear with the massive amounts of broken beer bottles and horrible graffiti strewn about. Nonetheless, its a cool place to poke around and the state park side of the area is really nice and well maintained. Ok... history lesson over, I promise.
